JUBILANT world leaders today hailed the capture of Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi dictator who evaded US-led forces for months, and voiced hope it would bring stability to the war-torn country.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we got him," the US civil administrator Paul Bremer said at a news conference in Baghdad to whoops of delight from assembled media.
Saddam, 66, was captured alive, dug out of an underground hole near his hometown of Tikrit last night by US forces and was being held in an undisclosed location, he said.
Celebratory shots and cries of joy rang out over Baghdad and other towns as Iraqis learnt of the capture of the man who ruled them with an iron fist for almost a quarter of a century.
"This is a great day in Iraq's history," Bremer said. "For decades hundreds of thousands of you suffered at the hand of this cruel man.

Holders of old-style passports will no longer be able to enter the US on the country's visa waiver programme after 1 October 2003. The US Department of State has announced that only travellers holding machine-readable passports from the 27 countries in the programme will be able to enter the country without having obtained a visa in advance. The change was originally due to happen in 2007 but has been brought forward by the Patriot Act, enacted after the events of 9/11.
Machine readable passports can be identified by a strip of characters including the passport number, expiry date, sex, name and date of birth in two lines along the bottom of the details page (inside the back cover). These details can be quickly scanned for immediate cross-referencing with immigration databases. The UK passport service began to introduce machine readable passports in 1988 and the vast majority of passports in circulation are now machine readable. However some UK passports issued by consular posts abroad are still not machine-readable.

Hey Everyone,
The American Womens Club are having a 4th of July Picnic. It will be Sunday the 6th of July at Nedlands Yacht Club. I don't know what they have planned for this year, but last year they had a grid iron game, lots of craft for sale (I bought a cool American flag tie), and lots of Yankee food (Hot Texas Chile!). Come one, come all !

One of America's best-known fast food outlets opened its first doughnut store in Sydney's Western suburbs today, with plans to open 30 similar stores across Australia and New Zealand.
Krispy Kreme, spelt with Ks, operates at more than 290 stores in North America, and a typical store produces more than 3,000 doughnuts per hour, and in larger stores that figure skyrockets to 12,000 doughnuts per hour.
As Jo Mazzocchi reports, it's the first store to open in the Asia-Pacific region, and while the local council says the community will benefit, others, such as nutritionists, say that Australian can well do without such fat and sugar-laden products being aggressively marketed here.

Consulate General of the United States of America, Perth, Australia. April 01 , 2003
This Public Announcement is being issued to alert Americans that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued a travel advisory and health alert notices, which are being distributed at ports of entry to people returning from the three SARS-affected regions. CDC advises that people planning elective or nonessential travel to mainland China and Hong Kong; Singapore; and Hanoi, Vietnam, may wish to postpone their trips until further notice. This Public Announcement expires on June 26, 2003.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are tracking SARS's origin and method of transmission as well as determining how its spread can be contained. In light of the continually evolving nature of the geographic spread of SARS, American citizens should regularly consult the CDC website and the WHO website for updates.
American citizens currently in or planning to travel to SARS-affected areas of Asia should consult the Department of State's Fact Sheet on SARS, Public Announcements, Travel Warnings, and Consular Information Sheets for China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Vietnam, all of which are available at the Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov. American citizens may also contact the Department of State toll-free at 1-888-407-4747, or if calling from overseas, 317-472-2328, for SARS information.

During the next several weeks be VERY cautious about opening or launching any e-mails that refer to the World Trade Center or 9/11 in any way, regardless of who sent it. PLEASE FORWARD TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW, "WTC" STANDS FOR THE WORLD TRADE CENTER. REALLY DANGEROUS BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL OPEN IT RIGHT AWAY, THINKING ITS A STORY RELATING TO 9/11!
BIGGGG TROUBLE !!!! DO NOT OPEN "WTC Survivor" It is a virus that will erase your whole "C" drive. It will come to you in the form of an E-Mail from a familiar person. I repeat, a friend sent it to me, but called and warned me before I opened it. He was not so lucky and now he can't even start his computer!
Forward this to everyone in your address book. I would rather receive this 25 times than not at all. So, if you receive an email called "WTC Survivor", do not open it. Delete it right away! This virus removes all dynamic link libraries (.dll files) from your computer.

This information is current as of Fri Feb 7, 2003 and has been issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
General Advice For Americans Resident Overseas
National Threat Level Raised to High
Based upon specific information analyzed by the intelligence community, and after conferring with the Homeland Security Council, the U.S. Government has increased the national threat level from yellow "elevated risk" to orange "high risk."
Recent intelligence reports, corroborated through multiple intelligence sources, suggest an increased likelihood that the al Qaeda terrorist network may attempt to attack Americans in the United States and/or abroad in or around the end of the Hajj, the Muslim religious period ending mid-February, 2003.
Orange: High Condition
A High Condition is declared when there is a high risk of terrorist attacks. In addition to the measures taken in the previous threat conditions, federal departments and agencies will consider the following protective measures:
· Coordinate necessary security efforts with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, National Guard or other security and armed forces;
· Take additional precautions at public events, possibly considering alternative venues or even cancellation;
· Prepare to execute contingency procedures, such as moving to an alternate site or dispersing the workforce; and
· Restrict access to a threatened facility to essential personnel only.
For further information, refer to the Department of Homeland Security Internet website at www.dhs.gov.
The Department of State continues to monitor security conditions overseas and, as always, will promptly disseminate information affecting the safety of Americans abroad through its consular information program. There's a rumour that a US F-18 fighter jet has "crashed" in Perth. This is not exactly true.
Apparently it overshot the runway into a paddock. No one was hurt, not even the pilot.

Welcome back everyone. I hope you all had (or are still having) a nice break from your normal routine. For me, its back to work tomorrow ... BOO HOO! Oh well, I did enjoy the last couple of weeks visiting family in Singapore, so I can't complain.
I have moved all of the 2002 information into the archive link below. You can still view it there, and 2001 also.
Hopefully this year we'll put the softball team back together too. Maybe we can challenge the American Womens Club to a game.
Keep an eye on the web site for some regular updates.
More later,
Paul
